Distance Learning
(Home Schooling, Independent Studies, Homework and Catch-up classes for students missing credits)
Due to the high tech nature of our school and software, Grace Christian School is able to offer home schooling through the internet, we no longer home school with books unless they are electives for a Distance Learning Student. Because some home schoolers choose to use a variety of curriculum, we offer our home schooling by subject, allowing you to pay as you go.
Our charges are as follows. A core class of 10 units (full year course) is $295.00. This includes the curriculum on the computer as well as help from our teachers as needed. Our teachers are online from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. M-F, PST. Your child can use the messaging system in SOS to ask questions if you are unable to help them. Students on this system may also make arrangements with teachers to use instant messaging through AIM if they wish. A parent or guardian does need to be present while the child is working.
So, if your student is taking a Language Arts course and Math course through our school, the charge would be $590.00 for the year. If you decided to add an additional class it would be another $295.00 to begin that course if it were 10 credits or $150.00 if it were a 5 unit course. A full year in all 5 core subjects is $1,475.00. (In California, where we are located, a class that is one semester is 5 units or credits and a class that is 2 semesters long is 10 credits. In some states this would be .5 and 1 credit, but it works out the same.)
The flexibility of paying per course allows you to add courses as you have the money available to you, though we strongly suggest you take at least 5 courses at once if possible. Once you have paid for a course, we will send you a password and a URL address for you to sign on using the Internet. You also need to have a DSL or cable connection to the internet. If you only have dial up, then you will receive a CD which contains the course videos to help your browser run much faster by not having to load the movies. Those CDs are $25.00 each.
When installed, your computer becomes a learning center. Your child will read the work on the computer screen. Then he will be offered questions to answer. Some will be objective and some will be subjective. The teacher in our school will grade all the subjective questions such as essays, paragraphs and projects. All tests and quizzes will be unblocked as the student is ready to take them. Being able to communicate through our message system makes it very easy for your child to ask for help.
Parents with younger children may work in LifePacs. This is the same content as the computer, but in book form. We prefer only to do this with local children as the cost of shipping books is a lot. Parents have to pay for shipping.
If your child works in the evenings, we can’t guarantee a live response, though teachers may check in now and then to see if anyone needs help. If not, your child will receive help in the morning when they log back on. Being online gives you a lot of flexibility for your family. If you need to go somewhere, you can work later in the day. A student should put in about 5 hours of work per day. But if they meet their goals for the day, they are finished! They like that. If they get behind, they can still work on the weekends or holidays to get back on track.
Grace Christian Schools will keep all the records for your child’s education that is completed through our school. If you use other curriculum, you are responsible for that record keeping. We will provide complete report cards and transcripts if all the work is done through our school. Please email us if you have further questions and we will be glad to help you.
